ATHENA STUDIOS, SELLY OAK

259 STUDIO APARTMENT STYLE ROOMS
Redeveloping land at the former Ambulance Station in Selly Oak into a futuristic student accommodation scheme, close to the city’s main university campus.

Project overview
Works included the demolition of an existing ambulance station and the erection of a four-storey northern block and adjoining five-storey southern block, providing 259 studio apartment style rooms, with associated landscaping, access roads and designated cycle spaces.

The new accommodation is aimed at postgraduate students who prefer a greater level of independence. Each student will have their own en-suite facility and a small bespoke kitchenette, housing a refrigerator, microwave and cooking facilities. A total of five disabled rooms have also been provided.

Additional accommodation includes a management suite, plant rooms and refuse stores. There is also 60 cycle parking spaces provided in the secure landscaped gardens, which also feature communal courtyards.

Working collaboratively with our client from the earliest stage in the development process, we delivered a smart solution that enhances and improves the quality and performance of the finished product at an affordable cost. This included the use of piled foundations and a lightweight steel frame offering significant benefits in terms of construction timescale and cost, as well as environmental performance.
